Thank you to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum for the Lois McClure stop on the Mohawk Towpath Byway. The boat was tied up all day at the state dock at the foot of Terminal Road in Halfmoon, just east of the Route 9 Crescent Bridge.
It made a very informative experience, especially the discussion about getting frozen in the canal as the captain was making a last run of the season. There are stories, locally, of new youth ending up in our local schools after the canal had frozen early. Imagine the captain’s concern as the frozen-in craft is subjected to more lateral pressure as the ice thickened and expanded with the increasing cold as the winter continued. How did he keep the vessel intact after off loading and trying to salvage the value of the cargo he had on board?
