Each year the Mohawk Towpath Byway Duathlon attracts top regional multi-sport athletes, as well as recreational runners and bikers. The start, exchange area, and finish are all at Riverview Orchards and the courses are through rural fall foliage lined landscapes along the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway.  We are excited to be working with a new timer this year, GreenLeaf Timing.  Also new this year is a knit cap with a full color embroidered byway logo for the first 100 registered participants.  All participants and volunteers receive a Giffy’s Bar-B-Q chicken dinner post race feed.

Two person teams are welcome: a runner and a cycler.

Awards for overall male and female first place, and first, second, and third place male and female finish in each ten year increment starting with 19 and under.  Awards also for first place male, female and mixed teams.

The Running Legs

Athletes will begin with a 2 mile run on a flat, fast course starting at Riverview Orchards and heading west to a turnaround on Droms Road that takes them back to the start. The same course will be repeated after the bike.

The running course.

Preview the Courses

Feel free to tour the duathlon course before the race! The courses are freshly marked with pavement markings.  The running leg starts at Riverview Orchard’s business sign.  Follow the red pavement marking at the Droms Road intersection and the turn-around point on Droms Road.  The bike course goes east on Riverview Road.  Follow the white pavement marking.

Volunteers will be stationed at the intersections on race day, but please note that it is the athlete’s responsibility to know the course.

Bike Course

Bikers leave the transition area and travel a mile and a half southeast on Riverview Road.  They will do two 7 mile loops of rolling terrain including Sugar Hill Road, a mile on Grooms, south on Vischer Ferry Road and west on Riverview Road and return to the transition area with 17 miles completed.

Byway Volunteers

We Need Volunteers

The Mohawk Towpath Byway runs entirely by volunteers.  No project is more exciting, more fun or more rewarding than helping with this event.  If you would like to be one of our growing team of volunteers that make this event memorable please contact us.  We need a set up crew, packet stuffers, registration staffers, road marshalls, course spotters, water station staff, youth event marshalls, transition area volunteers, and much more.  If you are competing we can use family members and friends, so bring them along so they can be a part of this exciting event.

Helping and committed so far:
Course design: Tracy Perry and Kristen Hislop; Mapping: Eric Hamilton; Registration: Henrietta O’Grady; Radio Communications: Fred Halley and the crew; Set up and logistics: Larry Syzdek and crew including Ted Klonowski Landscaping; Hospitality: Jill Koziol; Follow car: Barbara Hamilton; EMT: Maryanne Mackey; Race Director: Eric Hamilton.

We would like YOU on our team.  The value of your time is matched up to four times by a dwindling Federal Highway Byway funding to implement the Mohawk Towpath Byway. Contact us today to do your part.
